What Is the NANO TUER?
The Nano Hone NANO TRUERS is a compact, dual-sided diamond resin edge maintenance tool designed by Hap. It's light enough to hang on your kitchen wall, slip into a knife roll, or tuck into a chef's coat pocket — yet powerful enough to restore a shaving-sharp edge in seconds.
Unlike a traditional honing rod, the NANO TUER uses ultra-fine diamond resin surfaces in two grits — Medium (50 micron) and Fine (3 micron) — to quickly refresh an edge between full sharpenings on your whetstones.
What You'll Need
- Your NANO TUER (Medium/Fine)
- A few drops of water, light oil (Camellia Oil recommended), or nothing at all — it works dry too
- The knife you want to maintain
Step-by-Step: How to Use the NANO TUER
Step 1: Choose Your Side
The NANO TUER has two sides:
- Medium side — 50 micron diamond resin. Use this first if your edge has rolled or lost its bite. It removes a small amount of steel and resets the apex, leaving a slight tooth that's great for utility knives, hunting knives, and bread knives.
- Fine side — 3 micron diamond resin. Use this to polish the edge to a near-mirror finish that will shave hair. Ideal for kitchen knives, pocket knives, and any edge where push-cutting performance matters.
For light touch-ups, you can skip straight to the Fine side. If the edge feels rough or is noticeably dull, start on Medium and finish on Fine.
Step 2: Add a Drop of Lubricant (Optional)
A drop or two of water or Camellia Oil on the surface reduces friction and prolongs the life of the diamond resin. That said, the NANO TUER works perfectly dry — especially useful when you're in a kitchen or on the trail and don't have lubricant handy.
Step 3: Use Trailing Edge Strokes
This is the most important part. The NANO TUER is designed for trailing edge strokes — think of it like spreading butter on toast.
- Hold the NANO TUER flat on a stable surface, or grip it firmly in your non-dominant hand.
- Place the heel of your blade at one end of the surface at your sharpening angle (typically 15–20° for kitchen knives, 20–25° for utility/hunting knives).
- Drag the blade spine-first across the surface in a smooth, light stroke — the edge should trail behind, not lead. This is the opposite of a push stroke used on a whetstone.
- Alternate sides with each stroke to maintain even sharpening on both bevels.
- 5–10 strokes per side is usually plenty for a maintained edge.
Step 4: Test the Edge
After a few strokes on the Fine side, test your edge on the back of your thumbnail or a sheet of paper. A properly maintained edge will catch without skating and slice cleanly. If it still feels dull, return to the Medium side for a few more strokes, then finish on Fine.
When to Use the NANO TUER vs. a Full Sharpening
The NANO TUER excels at edge maintenance — keeping an already-sharp knife sharp. It is not a replacement for periodic full sharpenings on your Nano Hone whetstones. A good rule of thumb:
- NANO TUER: use before or after each cooking session, or whenever the edge feels slightly off.
- Whetstone: use when the NANO TUER stops restoring the edge — typically every few months depending on use.
Care and Maintenance
- Rinse the diamond resin surface under running water after use to clear metal filings (swarf).
- Pat dry before storing.
- Avoid dropping the tool on hard surfaces — while durable, the resin bond can chip if impacted at an edge.
- Store hanging or flat. The integrated hanging hole makes wall storage easy.
Who Is the NANO TUER For?
The NANO TUER is a perfect fit for:
- Home cooks who want a razor-sharp kitchen knife without pulling out a full sharpening kit every week.
- Professional chefs who need a pocket-sized tool for mid-service edge recovery.
- Hunters and outdoors enthusiasts who need a compact, dry-use option in the field.
- Knife enthusiasts who already sharpen on whetstones and want a fast strop-alternative for daily maintenance.
